Dartmouth, in south Devon is positioned downstream of Totnes, and is about a mile from the sea. The town has been very successful from the Norman times, when they started using this deep water port for trading with their home country. Maritime business is still very strong in Dartmouth, with freight and fishing being two of the main business activities. There is a large red brick Royal Naval College situated on the hill behind the port, and is still used to train officers in the Royal Navy.
The town of Dartmouth is on the western bank of the River Dart, and is in the enviable position of not being spoilt by the vast amounts of traffic which clogs up other towns in south Devon. Dartmouth exudes character and charm with its old lopsided buildings. The 17th century Butterwalk is one of most prominent of these lopsided buildings.
