Skipton is a lovely market town in Yorkshire. The town is steeped in history, being given its market rights by King John back in 1204. Skipton is still a thriving town, and holds a market in the high street four days a week. The independent shops and market make shopping in Skipton a great thing to do while enjoying your cottage break.
Explore the cobbled streets, small alleyways (known as ginnels), and the medieval castle. You can explore the streets yourself, or join one of the many guided tours which start outside the Toursit Information Centre.
The Lees and Liverpool canal passes through the centre of Skipton, and the canal basin is a great place to stop for a rest and watch the prettily painted canal boats go by. You can even take a boat trip to explore the canals. Or just walk along a towpath which run alongside the canal network.
Skipton in known as "the gateway to the Dales", and the delights of the Yorkshire Dales National Park are a short distance away.
