Very close to the River Dee there are some lovely riverside walks along its banks as well as excellent fishing, which may be arranged with the owner, subject to availability. There is a wide range of sporting activities available within the surrounding area, including skiing, climbing, golf, fishing, hang-gliding or 4x4 rides, allowing opportunities to take on a challange or experience some relaxation. Mountain walks can be enjoyed on some of the regions most famous mountains; the Balmoral Ranger's Visitor Centre on the shores of Loch Muik offers a good starting point. Banchory is now most prominent amongst the Deeside towns and offers an excellent range of facilities including an eighteen hole and a nine hole golf course. Braemar also offers some inexpensive golf courses but is most famous for its Highland Games, the Braemar Gathering, which were first held in the 11th-century. The area is rich in history with numerous castles and gardens to visit, such as Crathes, Craigievar, Castle Fraser and Drum. Aberdeen with its international airport at Dyce is only 22 miles distant and offers further extensive facilities befitting a city serving the north east of Scotland. The city's striking architecture has given it the name `The Granite City', and in the rain, the building shine a sparkling silver.
