Fowey: famous, ancient, very historic port beautifully sited at the mouth of the River Fowey. Its medieval seamen ('Gallants') fought a private war with the French for years. Has stayed small; lovely old centre with narrow streets, smart shops, craft galleries, excellent restaurants and waterfront pubs, yachts and big cargo ships (China clay) anchored out. Small sand and pebble cove with natural swimming pool in rocks and larger sandy cove along the esplanade. Large pretty cove with pub (Polkerris ), 2 miles; Daphne du Maurier lived and set 'Rebecca' nearby (Du Maurier Festival, mid May); glorious cliff-top and headland walks; cross-river ferries and boat trips; train station at Par, 3 miles (buses into village). Regatta, third week of August. The Eden Project, 5 miles.
... and also in Fowey, an end of terrace, 18th cent. house, created from two adjoining cottages. Very well done with a good balance of style, comfort and character. To one side, a private walled patio with table/chairs, barbecue and, rare for the town, a parking space. Conveniently close to the quay and the centre for shops, pubs, harbour (200 yards); beach, 500 yards.
From the lane, 6 slate steps up to patio; dining room with lowish beams (5’11) and slightly split-level floor; cosy living room with Victorian range (useable); smart kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, split-level oven and gas hob). Upstairs, three bedrooms a double with en suite shower-room (suite), a pretty room with two single beds and roof-top view, and a twin (Velux window); attractive, roomy bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). No smoking. Phone for local and incoming calls. Delightful cottage at any time of year.
