Monkstadt House

Once the ancestral home of the Clan MacDonald, this historic detached property enjoys wonderful open views across open countryside. Built in the early 1730s, it was here in 1746 that Bonnie Prince Charlie sailed over from Uist with Flora MacDonald, disguised as her maid and landed on the shores at Monkstadt, where he hid from the red coats who were at Monkstadt House. The property has been fully and sympathetically renovated and now provides spacious accommodation. The original building, a farmhouse, was developed and enlarged by the MacDonalds and became the seat of the clan chief in 1730 when they abandoned Duntulm Castle. A sign of great wealth, the building was recorded as having a slate roof as long ago as 1736 - possibly the first in Skye, and the Clan MacDonald stayed here until moving their headquaters to Armadale Castle in 1815. The Isle of Skye has much to offer any visitor, least of all the stunning scenery. Steeped in history, there are viking fort remains, Pictish stone markings and even evidence of early settlements in the form of `hut circles'. The most popular desination on Skye is the Cuillin Ridge, whose jagged peaks dominate the island during clear weather. Equally dramatic are the rock formations of the Trotternish peninsula, from which there are inspirational views across to the Western Isles. One of the prettiest places for a stroll and a picnic is the Fairy Glen, as is a walk to Caisteal Uisden, a ruined castle with no door where beautiful wild flowers grow in the remains during spring and summer. Skye's outdoor activites centre lies only 1 mile distant with kayaking, sailing, climbing are among the many pursuits that may be enjoyed. Pub 3 miles.
