Newton Ferrers/Noss Mayo: there is no more glowingly beautiful coastal scene in Devon than the lake-like estuary of the River Yealm, full of sailing boats and yachts, enclosed and sheltered by high, oak-wooded hillsides. These two adjoining villages are beside it; small, with riverside (and river view) good food (and children welcome) pubs, old fishermen’s cottages, essential shops. Very popular for sailing, especially dinghies; lovely, too, for walking (paths through the oak woods, brilliant views at every turn), or just sitting. Riding stables. Pedestrian ferry to coast walk to Wembury, and to secluded beach. Nearest sandy beach by car: Mothecombe (delightful), about 4 miles. Plymouth, 11; A38 road, about 7.
... also in Noss Mayo, on a quiet no through road leading to the coastal path, a
split-level house at the end of a short row. Opposite are public tennis courts and children’s swings and it is about 200 yards from two good food pubs and waterfront. At the front, a small hedged garden from which 11 steps up the side of the house to the back garden and 22 more steps up to the patio (table/chairs, barbecue) with views over the village. Inside, comfortable and modern. Hall and two downstairs bedrooms - one double and one with two singles and en suite loo (washbasin). Stairs (stairgates) up to another hall with door to garden; smallish living room (books/games, CD player) with open fire and pretty wooded views from a little bay window; large kitchen/dining room with dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, Rangemaster oven (gas and electric); children’s den with games/puzzles, 2nd TV/video; a twin bedroom (open doorway); bathroom (bath plus bath-shower); separate loo. Garage with table tennis. No smoking. Phone. Best for maximum 4 adults. A neat, welcoming base in a good area.
