A step back in time can be taken by visiting quaint unspoilt smugglers' coves such as Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay and Runswick - as well as the port of Whitby, with its colourful harbour (from where Captain James Cook set sail), old cobbled streets filled with antique and curio shops, and a 3-mile sandy beach. The ancient city of York is also just an hour's drive.
