Grooms Cottage

This imposing 19th century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby `Owl Coaching Inn' (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that's now a farm some 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper. The building has been most sympathetically converted and retains hand-cut lintels, vaulted coach-ways on the exterior, and superb barrel-vaulted ceilings. Cast-iron saddle racks, unique internal arching, and cast-iron roof trusses all emphasize the historical importance of this grade 2-listed structure. The original arched coach entrances now have French windows that open onto flag stone terrace areas, and the stone-flagged stable-level yard retains many original stone and cast-iron troughs. In the grounds, there is a small-detached cottage that provides ideal accommodation for members of the party wanting their own space and privacy, and if booked together the properties can accommodate up to 22 people. Turpin's cottage overlooks a wooded dell, and adjoins a 2-acre paddock and a play field with ample parking, that's reached by steep steps (not suited for the infirm) running down from the coach house stable yard. The Black Brook stream runs alongside the paddock (children must be supervised). Turpin's Coach House Cottages are close to many footpaths and bridleways - you might wander up to the Depth of Lumb, saunter along the nearby packhorse trail and lead-miners `Portway' (still traceable all the way up to Castleton), or wander a few furlongs south to the wooded grit stone Chevin Hills, the very last outpost of England's Pennine backbone. Belper's formal River Gardens, visitor centre, and historical mills, now a World Heritage site, are within 2 miles. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Matlock and Matlock Bath, and the popular market town of Bakewell, are all a short drive away. Shops and pubs 2 miles
