Manaton: Little high village with pub, tennis court, children’s playground, very pretty round its fine granite church, in perhaps the most beautiful part of the Dartmoor National Park; very close are some of its most spectacular rock tors (Hound Tor, Bowerman’s Nose) and also lovely steep tree-filled valleys (Lustleigh Cleave). ... and about a mile from Manaton, a little below Hound Tor and close to Bowerman’s Nose, a detached cottage, totally secluded, peaceful and private, part dating from the 16th cent., and once owned by a tin mine captain. 100 yards of steep, narrow drive lead to it. Nearly 3 acres of woods, stream and shrub/flower-filled lawned garden (bench, lily pond) full of birdsong and dragonflies surround it. From the enclosed garden, you can walk or mountain bike straight on to the moor (pub, about 2 miles).
